2107 Winter Concert

Thursday, December 7th @ 7pm

The Stuart High School Orchestra Department
is pleased to offer its
Annual Winter Concert!

The students have worked extremely hard on the music literature that they will be presenting to the public. The concert is free and all are invited to attend! There will be a small reception after the concert in the Little Theater.

The following are “call times” for the students. Please arrive at SHS no later than your selected time. Bring black socks/tights and black shoes to wear.
§  Symphonic Orchestra – 5:30pm
§  Concert Orchestra – 5:30pm
§  Chamber Orchestra – 6:00pm

The concert counts as a summative grade for the class. All students are required to attend.

We are asking for food and drink donations from students for the reception immediately following the concert.  Drop off items at the Little Theater on your way into the school. If your last name begins with:
A to T – please bring a dozen cookies or cupcakes or other "holiday"  dessert item to share
S to Z – please bring individual drinks such as bottled water, juice boxes (eg. Capri Sun) or cans of soda

Thank you for your tireless support. We may not say it often enough but your continued commitment to orchestra is greatly appreciated and does not go unnoticed.

District Honors Orchestra Auditions Tuesday Nov. 14th

District Honors Orchestra Auditions are Tuesday, November 14th @ Francis C. Hammond MS.

ALL orchestra students have been given excerpts and scales back in September
to prepare for this audition and all orchestra students are encouraged to do so.

      Francis C. Hammond MS
      4646 Seminary Road
      Alexandria, VA 22304

Registration is 3:30 - 6:30pm, on a first-come, first-served basis.

DO NOT SHOW UP BEFORE 3:30 because of the school buses.

Unless you absolutely need an early number DO NOT to show up right at 3:30 as the audition line will be extremely long at that time. If your schedule permits, show up around 4:30 or so. Or even later. Just make sure that you are there before 6:30.

It is $5 to audition and please have exact change.

Auditions are usually done by 8pm - and even earlier for many instruments. Violins tend to go longer as there are more students auditioning on violin. No results will be posted that evening.

Students who are selected will be participating in the
District Honors Orchestra Event at South County HS January 4th - 6th.

Good luck to all students auditioning and please do not hesitate to email Ms. Haynes with questions.

TAG DAY 2017: Parent Volunteers Needed

Please mark your calendars for TAG DAY, Saturday September 16th. It is the most important fundraiser for the Stuart music department in that it benefits all students in Orchestra, Band and Chorus. It is an annual September event in which music students canvas the neighborhoods to request donations for Stuart’s fantastic music ensembles. Every year the students raise over $30k in one day of fundraising. The funds are then divided between the 3 music disciplines depending on the hours of participation from the students/parents in that music discipline.

TAG Day is a long-standing tradition of Stuart High School. Groups of four or six will depart with a volunteer parent driver to go door-to-door in pairs, visiting homes in the Stuart neighborhoods. All neighbors are given a calendar of Stuart music performances, and donors to Stuart receive a tax-deductible receipt for their records.

Orchestra parent volunteers are needed to make this fundraiser a success. We need parents to act as drivers for the day. Each parent driver takes 4 students in their vehicle and drives a designated route through the community. Parents' hours are also included in the division of the funds so please volunteer for this very important event. Please volunteer at this link:  http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0949a9ac29a02-stuart3

All orchestra students are expected to participate Saturday September 16th from 8a to ~3:30p. This fundraiser provides the money for yearly expense of uniforms, instrument purchase and repair, transportation to festivals and performances, scholarships, guest clinicians, and participation fees in competitions and festivals.  Please wear comfortable shoes, nice jeans, and your orchestra t-shirt.
The Orchestral Department thanks you in advance for your support of this very important fundraiser!

Chicago Spring Trip 2017

Tuesday April 18th
Mandatory Parents' Meeting
for all music students going to Chicago
7pm @ Stuart Auditorium

  • Students will need to bring their suitcase to this meeting. They will drop it off after the meeting and it will be secured overnight in the school. Students will NOT have access to their suitcase again until Thursday evening so please do not pack anything that you might need before then (toothbrush, deodorant, etc.). These items will need to be placed in their "carry-on bag" that they will bring Wednesday evening.
  • Parents -- if you signed the luggage search form stating that you will check the luggage yourself and verify that nothing has been placed in there that is illegal, or against school policy (medications, etc.) you will need to drop off the luggage yourself Tuesday evening. If you signed the luggage form stating that we can search the luggage prior to securing it, the student can wait in line to drop off the luggage. Luggage is searched in a private area. Please have the student's name on the luggage and do not lock the luggage.
  • After the meeting there will be rehearsals with each of the music groups. Choir will rehearse right away while orchestra and band check their luggage. Orchestra and band will then have a rehearsal while choir checks their luggage. This will help with the flow of traffic.
  • Water and Snack Donations Needed! We would like to have water on each of the three buses for the students and also snacks. In the past - chips, cookies, fruit snacks, crackers, trail mixes have been donated (usually from a store like Costco, etc.) If you would like to donate either water or food please bring the donation with you Tuesday night for the parent meeting and we can store it until the next day when we leave.
